The Command, Control and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis (CCIACAD) is offering fellowships to pursue graduate studies at Rutgers. The fellowships are funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, offering graduate students generous support for up to three years in order to pursue research interests that are applicable to data analysis for homeland security.
Fields that are of particular relevance to CCICADA include computer science, mathematics, operations research, industrial engineering, statistics, and the biological sciences, but we welcome applicants from other areas of science and engineering that have relevance to homeland security.
Graduate fellows are invited to participate in the full range of activities at CCICADA, offering exposure to a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research and education programs. Specific applications of ongoing research include: intelligence analysis, biosurveillance, epidemiology, port resilience, evacuation planning, cybersecurity, emergency alerting, social media analysis, nuclear threat detection, and privacy-preserving methods for data analysis.
Recipients of CCICADA graduate fellowships are offered the following benefits for up to three years:
- Full tuition at Rutgers University;
- $27,600 annual stipend;
- Rutgers University health benefits;
- Travel allowance;
- One-on-one mentoring by CCICADA faculty; and
- Interactions with the national laboratories and other DHS centers of excellence.
Applicants must:
- Be a full-time Rutgers graduate student in a science/math/engineering discipline at the start of the fellowship, which may begin with either the Spring or Fall semester in 2011;
- Be a U.S. citizen;
- Have and maintain a GPA of 3.3 or higher;
- Agree to do at least one (or more if they choose) summer internship at a National Laboratory, a DHS University Center, or other homeland security venue during the time of their fellowship (paid for by the fellowship);
- Commit to work at a homeland security venue (such as DHS or a National Laboratory) for the year immediately following degree completion. CCICADA will help students identify suitable positions, which may (subject to availability) include postdoctoral fellowships at national laboratories or with DHS university centers. The CCICADA fellowship program is advised by members of several national laboratories which host vibrant postdoctoral programs encouraging scholarly research and publication.
- Commit to taking an active interest in the projects and programs at CCICADA
Preference will be will given to students already engaged in homeland security activities or working with CCICADA faculty.
We plan for one fellowship to begin in January 2011 and continue through December 2013 and two fellowships to begin in September 2011 and continue through August 2014, assuming satisfactory progress in all cases.
Fellowships beginning in September are open both to current Rutgers graduate students and to students at other institutions applying to attend Rutgers beginning in September 2011. Students who are not currently in a Rutgers Graduate program should apply for the fellowship and for admission to a graduate program separately. The fellowship beginning in January is open to current Rutgers graduate students only.
Fellowship application due dates:
Applications for fellowships to begin in January 2011 are due by 12/8/10.
Applications for fellowships to begin in September 2011 are due by 6/3/11 for full consideration.
